Tooth Extraction

In situations where a tooth extraction is unfortunately necessary, our highly trained, compassionate team will do so with skill and gentleness.

Why might I need a tooth extraction?

We’ll only ever recommend extraction when needed, there are some situations when removal of a tooth or teeth is the right course of action.

These include:

• A tooth being decayed or damaged beyond repair
• Overcrowding
• An impacted or infected wisdom tooth

Is it painful?

We will always apply an anaesthetic beforehand so that the area being treated becomes numb, and so you’re comfortable throughout the treatment.

What happens during the treatment?

The treatment process will vary according to whether you are receiving a simple or surgical extraction.

What is a simple extraction?

As the name implies, this is a simpler form of tooth extraction that can be done when the tooth being removed is not damaged or impacted in any way. During a simple extraction, we’ll apply a local anaesthetic and gently remove the tooth in question using forceps.

What is a surgical extraction?

Surgical extractions occur in more complex situations. This might be because the tooth is broken or because it is hidden below the gum line. In some cases, we may need to refer you to a specialist for a surgical extraction.

What happens after an extraction?

We’ll make sure you’re aware of all your after-care needs when you leave us, but you should avoid hot and cold drinks until after the anaesthetic has worn off. Once it has worn off, you may also start to experience some pain at the site of the extraction. This is perfectly natural and is normally treatable with over-the-counter painkillers.

Will I need to replace my tooth?
